EU LAC APP Fourth Project Management Board meeting
Online - 5 May 2021
The Fourth Project Management Board meeting was held online on 5 May 2021.
Representatives from Latin American and Caribbean countries, from the regional organizations that are part of the project, as well as observers from regional ICAO offices and LACAC attended the webex together with the EU LAC APP project team of EASA. The webex was also attended by Ms Lucrecia Cibrian, Regional Team-Foreign Policy Instrument (FPI) Americas, and Mr Luc Tytgat, EASA Strategy and Safety Management Director.
Ms Lucrecia Cibrian, Regional Team-Foreign Policy Instrument (FPI) Americas, opened the meeting, welcomed the numerous participation of the project stakeholders, and acknowledged that 2020 has been a difficult year, especially for the LAC region and aviation sector. Ms Cibrian went on to say that despite the difficulties, the project partners’ engagement has remained high, and partners are actively involved in the project activities, demonstrating a continued commitment.
Mr Luc Tytgat, Strategy and Safety Management Director of EASA, emphasized the importance of partnership in aviation. This partnership project so far has covered various aviation domains. The current challenge for all the partners is to work towards bringing passengers back into the sky. EASA would love to return to LAC region with on-site events and will work towards encouraging EU citizens to resume traveling to LAC region when the pandemic is over. Mr Tytgat went on to say that in the future, when operations resume, we all will need to broaden the topics on the agenda in aviation. Safety will need to go hand in hand with environment, which is an emerging topic, and goes beyond just CORSIA. EU’s and EASA’s future plans in LAC region will therefore reflect these new trends.
The first part of the meeting reviewed the activities carried out and the fulfilment of objectives in 2020. The second part dealt with future activities and possible actions for 2021.
All the partners recognised and praised the work done within the framework of the project so far, and emphasized the importance of synergies and future joint efforts to continue in the same vein.
